Everyone thinks big changes lead to big results. But every coach knows it’s the small habits – the boring ones, the simple ones – that move the needle.
December is chaotic, so now is not the time to attempt a total lifestyle overhaul. But it is the perfect time to focus on small, manageable habits that keep you feeling good and stop you from sliding backwards.
Here are seven habits that take almost no effort but genuinely make a big difference.
1. Drink a Full Glass of Water First Thing
You wake up dehydrated, especially in winter when indoor heating dries you out even more. Start your day with one big glass of water. It boosts energy, digestion, mood and reduces unnecessary snacking.
2. Get Outside for 10-15 Minutes of Daylight
Daylight in winter is powerful for mood, sleep and energy. Even a short walk resets your body clock and helps with motivation.
3. Aim for Protein at Every Meal
Protein keeps you full, helps control appetite and supports muscle recovery – especially important when you’re busier and sleep can be disrupted.
Simple targets:
- Breakfast: eggs, yoghurt, protein shake
- Lunch & dinner: chicken, fish, lean meats, beans, tofu
4. Two Strength Sessions a Week
December is not about perfection – it’s about maintenance. Two sessions a week keeps your routine alive and your strength topped up so you don’t feel like a beginner in January.
5. One “Mindful Meal” Per Day
Not a diet. Not a restriction. Just one meal where you slow down and avoid mindless eating. It helps you feel more in control without taking anything away.
6. Keep a Consistent Bedtime (Within 30 Minutes)
Late nights happen – it’s Christmas. But keeping some regularity stops the 3pm crashes and keeps your training energy high.
7. Plan Your Week in 5 Minutes
Look at your calendar every Sunday or Monday and choose:
- What days you’ll train
- What nights you’re out
- When you’ll prep food or shop
A tiny bit of planning removes stress and stops you drifting.
Small Habits, Big Impact
These are simple wins that keep you feeling good, even when life gets busy. Stack a few together and you’ll feel more energised, more in control and more consistent – without sacrificing any of the fun of December.
