How to Stay Motivated When It’s Freezing Outside

Fitness Blog, Winter Training

Let’s be honest: training in the cold is tough and it’s hard to stay motivated. When it’s dark at 4pm and your car feels like a fridge, the temptation to skip the gym is very real. But winter isn’t just a test – it’s an opportunity.

At Phoenix Fitness, we see motivation dip every year… but we also see some people thrive. Not because they’re superheroes, but because they’ve found simple ways to stay consistent when it’s freezing outside.

Here are some strategies that actually work.

1. Change the Goal From “Motivation” to “Momentum”

You don’t need motivation to train. You need momentum. When you go consistently – even when you don’t feel like it – your brain starts seeing training as a non-negotiable part of the week.

Motivation follows action, not the other way around.

2. Have a Winter Training Rule

Rules create clarity. A good winter rule might be:

  • “If it’s a training day, I go – no debates.”
  • “If I don’t feel like going, I’ll go for the warm-up only.”
  • “If I skip today, tomorrow is non-negotiable.”

Simple, but effective.

3. Wear Layers – More Than You Think

Starting warm makes everything easier. Rule of thumb: wear one more layer than you think you need. Once you’re warm, you can take it off. Being cold at the start kills motivation.

4. Train With People – Not Alone

Group personal training is a game changer in winter. When others are showing up alongside you, you feel more accountable and more energised. Community beats willpower every time.

5. Focus on How You’ll Feel After the Session

It takes five seconds to think:
“How will I feel in an hour if I skip vs if I go?”

99% of the time, that’s enough to get you moving.

6. Prepare the Night Before

Winter mornings are easier when:

  • Your clothes are laid out
  • Your bag is packed
  • Your water is ready

Remove obstacles. Make going the easiest option.

7. Keep the Sessions Short & High Quality

Winter is not the time to attempt huge sessions. Short, focused, high-energy training works incredibly well.

Two to three good sessions per week beats one massive session that you dread.

Winter Isn’t the Problem – The Story You Tell Yourself Is

Instead of thinking, “It’s too cold to train,” shift it to something like:
“It’s cold, so training will warm me up and make me feel better.”

Small reframes change everything.
