At our recent workshop, we focused on the back squat, helping members dial in technique, build confidence, and push their limits under the bar. There are plenty of squat variations out there — from goblet squats to the beloved (🤥) Bulgarian split squat — and they’ve all got their place, depending on the individual.
It was a proper community afternoon: coaches on hand, members helping members, lots of laughs — and loads of people hitting personal bests.
We include these workshops in our memberships as a way to give back, grow confidence, and keep people progressing. Helping someone squat better doesn’t just improve their lifting — it improves how they feel in and outside the gym.

Wow — can’t believe this popped up on my timeline today.
This was 9 years ago… Standing in the middle of my first ever gym, feeling proud (and a bit knackered) after laying the floor.
By this point, we’d already ripped up the old surface, re-levelled it, and got stuck into fitting the rubber flooring — a massive job at the time, but one we were fully committed to getting right.
Blood, sweat, and tears went into getting this place open. We had a solid plan, passion, belief, and a big vision.
Crazy to think that same floor is still perfectly intact 9 years later — and we’re still going strong.

When Tom joined us at Phoenix, he was at his heaviest — 94kg. He hadn’t trained properly in a couple of years, clothes weren’t fitting right, and he was just feeling off. Time and motivation were the main blockers — like it is for so many people juggling family and work.
But he was ready for a change.
A year later, he’s dropped over 30lbs — slow and steady — averaging 2.5lbs a month. And it’s not just what the scales say. He’s built strength, muscle, and confidence, and it shows from every angle in his photos.
From the front, back and side you can clearly see:
• Leaner waist and much less around the stomach
• Shoulders and chest more defined
• Stronger arms and better posture
• Noticeable muscle through the back
• A calmer, more confident look overall
The graph says it all — consistent progress over time, no crazy diets or unrealistic routines.
He’s now into parkruns, lifts heavy, and actually enjoys training. He’s got proper power on all the big lifts and shows up to our workshops wanting to get better. Plus, he’s made mates here — the community side of Phoenix really matters.
One thing worth mentioning — his wife Charlotte makes insanely good cakes. We tried some at our charity event last year and yeah, resisting those is a whole challenge of its own 😅

Training people to reach new limits of fitness is my day job — but creating a clean, fresh, and motivating space for our members is just as important.

Phoenix is more than a gym its a community built to support you through every aspect of training and improving yourself. Comming back from mental health issues and lack of gym buddy I joined their 28 day challenge, this was by far the best thing I ever did and it got me back into excercising and on the right path forward. 2 years later im still a member and have made some great friends, the camaraderie is amazing, everyone is so welcoming and supportive, coupled with excellent coaching from Luke, James & Tom. I have been training with Luke at Phoenix for the last 11 years. The gym is fully equipped offering a variety of exercises. Sessions are well planned to meet the needs of all members. Inside during winter, with space outside in the summer. I am now in my mid 60s, I may moan and groan, but it's part of my routine now to attend 3 sessions a week. It's my happy place, I do it to keep healthy, active, to be able to run after the grandchildren. I’ve been attending Phoenix for almost 2 years and I can quite honestly say the experience has changed my life. Each coach (Luke, James and Tom) has their own unique style. However, their main aim is to get the best out of you. I’ve lost weight, gained muscle, and believe I’ve built friendships that will last a lifetime. 100% recommend this gym 🙌.
