That’s where the Bosu ball comes into play, a recent addition to our gym to introduce our members to innovative ways of enhancing core strength, always driving them to maximise their gym time.
You might find a Bosu ball in many gyms, or perhaps you have one at home, a relic of a New Year’s resolution. It’s a piece of equipment full of versatility, especially for those aiming to develop their core to support their back.
Bosu Ball Shoulder Taps
Start Position - With the dome side up, position your feet on top of the Bosu ball in a narrow stance to challenge your balance.
Action - Shift your weight onto one arm and lift the opposite arm to tap the shoulder across your body.
Alternate - Continue alternating sides with each tap, focusing on keeping your movements controlled and steady.
Core Engagement - Throughout the exercise, keep your core tight and engaged. Be mindful to avoid arching your lower back to maintain proper form and maximise core activation.

G’day mate! Today we’re working on the Australian Pull Up 🇦🇺
How to do it: Position yourself underneath a fixed barbell, grabbing the bar with an overhand grip shoulder width apart.
Keep your legs and torso straight, starting with your arms extended.
Pull your upper chest towards the barbell, keeping your elbows close to your torso, and ensure that your body remains straight by engaging the core throughout the movement.
Control your movement back to the starting position and repeat.
Benefits & Targeted Muscles: This exercise primarily targets the muscles of the upper back, including the lats, rhomboids, and traps, as well as engaging the biceps and core for a comprehensive upper body workout. The Australian Pull Up is an excellent exercise for developing upper body strength and muscular endurance. It’s particularly beneficial for those looking to improve posture and build a stronger, more robust back.
Bonus: By maintaining a rigid body position, it also serves as an effective core stabiliser, promoting core strength and coordination across a wide range of movements.

Yesterday was a day of celebration - Becky's eternal 21st birthday! 🎉 We spent a day in Cambridge, sharing quality time, laughter, and the joy of being present with each other.
For those of you on this journey with me, you know how seriously I’m taking my fitness goals. 🎯 Even amidst the festivities, I was mindful to maintain the balance between celebrating and staying on track.
I’ve shared my MyFitnessPal diary. Despite indulging in a sandwich and pizza around lunchtime, I managed my calories by choosing lighter meals for breakfast and dinner. That's the beauty of balance and informed choices.
Staying disciplined isn't about restriction; it's about making choices that align with our goals. Yes, the temptation was there, Cambridge is full of great ways to make ourselves fat! But succumbing to the temptations would have meant straying from my path - and that's not an option when you're committed.
Phoenix Fitness is here to guide and motivate you, but ultimately the responsibility for your health lies with you. It's about the choices you make every single day.

It's my turn to hold up the results board - just like we do to share our members' successes. I put myself on a 28 Day Challenge, embracing the SMART goals we encourage here. Starting at 228lbs, my first checkpoint was to shed half a stone (7lbs). Well, I didn't just hit the mark; I threw in an extra pound for good measure, finishing on an 8lb loss. 🏋️♂️
Now, for the medium term, I'm aiming for a drop of 14lbs, which I'm pacing to achieve in the next 4-6 weeks. As for the longer term? I'm focused on reaching 210lbs, envisioning to celebrate an 18lb loss four months from the day I started this weight loss journey.
So, we're talking a weekly weight loss of just over 1lb - exactly what we recommend, though we all know the scale can swing faster or slower depending on factors like effort, sticking to the plan, lifestyle choices, and those unique personal obstacles.
To hit these milestones, I've been training three times a week, lifting heavy weights, and incorporating HIIT sessions. I also sneaked in a home workout a couple of times. I pushed myself to do three 5k runs and have been nailing my 10k steps daily.
On the food front, I’ve been religiously tracking my intake with MyFitnessPal (let's face it – most of us can't wing it when it comes to weight loss), and my meals have been a colourful mix of 40% carbs, 30% protein, and 30% fat.
I've managed to bag 5-8 hours of sleep a night, all while running a business, and being a Dad and partner to the best of my ability. I've walked a mile in our ideal client's shoes and stuck to the script we give them.
Naturally, I've indulged in a couple of meals out, enjoyed one night on the town, and savoured a few treats. But, let’s be realistic - if you’re serious about making a change, and you’re sick and tired of the excuses you keep telling yourself, then you've got to play by the rules and make sacrifices to achieve your body transformation goals.
I’m thrilled with the progress and can't wait to share my next checkpoint in 4 weeks – fingers crossed for that 14lb milestone!
This challenge has been a lot of fun – it’s kept me motivated, focused, and looking not just at short term results, but the bigger picture of being in wicked shape for summer.

Big news! We're super excited to welcome Tom (on the left in the photo) to our coaching team at Phoenix Fitness.
He's already spent many hours with us, shadowing James and me, getting the hang of how we do things, chatting, coaching, and interacting with members, not to mention running some sessions under our watch.
Today marks his first official day, and he'll be flying solo from tomorrow, taking the lead on all this weekend's sessions.
Tom's the kind of guy who's easy to talk to, super friendly and approachable, and really pushes people to get the most from their workouts. He’s knowledgeable and has slotted in perfectly with our values and ethos as a business.
It's the perfect time for him to join the crew as James and I really needed another pair of hands. With 50 sessions now on our timetable, his arrival is welcomed massively. Our members have taken to him straight away - his love for fitness is evident, and we're thrilled to have him with us.

I would like to recommend Phoenix - Ministry of Fitness. As a busy IT professional, I could never make time for the Gym and would eat badly on take-away lunches. I was diagnosed as Type 2 Diabetic and took early retirement towards the end of lockdown and had to do something. I tried just joining a Gym but after only a couple of visits I stopped going. I needed the structure of the class Phoenix offered so I took the “28 day Challenge” and haven’t looked back. Luke and James have a fun attitude and offer support and encouragement.
Personal trainers are expensive on top of a Gym membership which is why I like the combined approach of Phoenix which makes it cost effective, the classes are tailored to your personal abilities and goals but within the friendly social environment of a class.
The class is a great way to meet people and everyone at Phoenix is friendly and encourages each other, this means it is easier to keep your attendance up - Without the structure of these classes it would be too easy to let your attendance slip. The classes are never boring, Luke and James vary the routines and keep it fun and challenging.

I was dubious to join as I am not good at sticking to things although I did the odd workout at home and had previously been with other gyms I was in a rut and struggling to motivate myself and see any changes, So i decided as a treat to myself to try the month challenge.
Well phew it kicked my butt big time , I realised I was not hitting half the muscles at home as I was in the sessions and it felt great ( sore but great) not to mention the added support and encouragement I received from Luke, Tom and James and everyone else there for the same reasons as me.
It was a great experience and started to notice results, I dont have lots of weight to lose but wanted to feel stronger and leaner .
It worked 1 month was down and I felt great .
So I signed up to keep going with them a few days a week and I will say my sleep is better , my mental health is improving and I'm feeling good in myself which is the most important thing.
I would recommend these guys to anyone and I do. If you need a boost and like to feel encouraged not in a scary way but a safe way and also want a giggle while you do it please give phoenix a go you will not be disappointed 😊.

Finally I’ve found a workout that I genuinely enjoy, which means I consistently do it! I’m getting much stronger and my overall health and confidence has improved. The coaches have a brilliant blend of encouragement, stretch and humour, and the other gym members are welcoming - if you’ve ever felt intimidated by at a gym before, you’ll know how important both of these human elements are. As someone who has historically been adverse to exercise I find myself going to Phoenix Fitness three times a week - how on earth did that happen?? Well it’s down to incredibly supportive instructors (Luke and James - sorry Tom not made it to one of your sessions yet), great camaraderie amongst my fellow gym bunnies and a variety of exercises. For those of you like me who don’t particularly like exercise, I encourage you to join Phoenix to help change your mindset. Go on, give it a try, you won’t regret it (although your body might when it gets gym ache!).

I joined Pheonix April 2023 having been a member of gyms over many years. I was, as is normal, a bit worried about what it would be like, but I can honestly say it’s one of the best decisions I have made. I joined to improve my muscle mass and bone density, as with the aging process this deteriorates quickly. Everything can be tailored to your individual needs but in a group environment. Both of the areas I wanted to work on have improved greatly with the support of Luke and James and it is a fantastic place to be encouraged but other members. It’s like a little family who encourage one another and where you can also have a fun time with lots of laughs along the way. Give it a go, you won’t regret it!
